Edmonton Transit Lines Named

The names of Edmonton’s light transit rail lines have been revealed. In an effort to engage Edmontonians in the naming process, Leger Marketing issued a 2012 contest to name the current and future transit lines. This contest was the perfect opportunity for residents to play a key role in the identification of Alberta’s Capital Region. After carefully sorting through 900 submissions, Edmonton’s Naming Committee unanimously approved the final list of names on January 21st, 2013:

1. From Northeast Edmonton to Heritage Valley – Capital Line
2. From St.Albert to Health Sciences LRT Station – Metro Line
3. From Lewis Farms to Sherwood Park – Energy Line
4. From Lewis Farms to Ellerslie – Valley Line
5. From Sherwood Park to Ellerslie – Festival Line

A stroke of creative genius or an irrelevant list of names? Either way, the recent news has Edmontonians talking. While the Energy, Valley and Festival lines are currently in the planning stages, Edmontonians can expect to see the new line names advertised right away.

Edmonton’s recent LRT additions come at no surprise to residents. The city has been playing catch up to other transit systems in the province. Our neighbours to the south have an intricate transit system which has expanded several times since 1895. Although Calgary’s Naming Committee selected conservative colour coded names for their C-Train lines, Calgarians are generally pleased with the system. Especially with their free fare zones!

Love them or hate them these names are here to stay. When our future generations are commuting throughout the city, the naming process will be all but a distant memory. For more information on the LRT lines visit the City of Edmonton website.
